Grow With The Flow

Throughout my whole life, every single time I got hiccups (even to this day), my family hears them and says, “You must be growing!” Well I can’t still say that today when I get hiccups I grow physically. But what it has done for me now, especially during this crazy time, is gets me thinking.

Because along those same lines, when we hit a “bump in the road” many people call it a “hiccup”. Are hiccups and bumps in the road bad? I guess I don’t have the answer for everyone, but these hiccups now have let me grow and learn things along the way.

Life hasn’t always been easy. I will say I definitely have had it better than most, my parents and my whole family have blessed me beyond measure. But those blessings have also come from times of hiccups and maybe not always being on the path I was supposed to be on.

It takes me some time to admit when I’m wrong. I’m prideful. I don’t like change. I’ve had to learn over the years to “go with the flow” and sometimes let things come to me. That was not always the case for me growing up. I liked to be right and still to this day I hate being told I’m wrong. And even when I know I’m wrong that still does not make that “pill” any easier to swallow. But now looking back at those times, the way I see things now, is I have learned a lot. I can find out ways to get better.

So in this crazy time of things not feeling “normal”, and maybe you feel like you’re just rolling with the punches. How can you make it feel like these punches are actually growing you? What lessons can be learned?

One of my favorite quotes comes from a movie some critics would say should not have been made, but besides the point, the quote has some incredible meaning:

“Nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.” ~ Rocky Balboa

There will come some times in life when it feels like a hiccup. Maybe something small that just puts a little wrinkle in your plans. Or maybe it’s something huge that could potentially change your outlook on life. But there is one certainty in life, that there will be hiccups, curveballs, hardships, burdens, however you want to word it. And if you don’t believe me see - John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you WILL HAVE TROUBLE. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

It’s in these times that I have found myself learning more, growing, and challenging myself to stand back up and see what is next.

So the next time someone looks at you and tells you to “go with the flow.” Just remember to think to yourself that this time you are facing, is an opportunity to learn. An opportunity to grow with the flow...
