Corner[Wedge]Stone

The other day, Renee and I were walking down the coast of Australia looking at some beautiful sculptures. One really struck us and it got me wanting to share some of my thoughts from the description.

From sculptor Bernard Toonen (Sculpture: Corner Wedge), “As we grow, parts of who we are split off like a wedge, just a bit, just a corner. From different angles, we look like we have a purpose, we look strong, and we look sharp. When we are in our element with people around us, we can again be seen as whole.”
This is a beautiful description and reality of life. And I wanted to share some of my thoughts about this. For one, I think of what a literal wedge does to something. It splits it apart, it was designed to be placed in between two objects and force them apart. In our lives, I am sure there are things, people, and anything that wedge between us and what God has in store for us (whether we want them there, or even allow them to be there). Nonetheless, a wedge still serves a purpose. Even as we talk about what a wedge does, a wedge can be useful, it can serve a benefit.
As I looked at the sculpture, it’s a very simple piece of art, but as Toonen explains, I was really amazed at the part in his description, “...When we are in our elements with people around us, we can again be seen as whole.”
How often in life do we find ourselves saying, “Man I really miss so and so…” or maybe even, “Wow! I feel so much better when I am around so and so…”
People in life, better known as community, bring us a feeling of belonging. They bring us a sense of wholeness. This is exactly what Christ says about us in this same breath. I know in my own life I have been broken apart, I have been split like a wedge. But Christ sees me in His perspective and makes me whole. There’s no better element to be in than Christ’s.
There is a worship song by Hillsong Worship titled Cornerstone, and in the song they sing, “Christ alone. Cornerstone. Weak made strong…” And these lyrics are beautiful and true because Christ is our life’s cornerstone. By very nature we are weak, we have been wedged apart and broken. But Christ is the firm foundation, He is the cornerstone of our life! By very definition, a cornerstone is, “an essential feature on which a particular thing depends or is based.”
So I end with this. In our life, we may have been broken apart, or wedged apart from people, or things around us. But again, with the right perspective or shift in our faith, Christ brings us wholeness - that firm foundation. Allow Him to work in your life to feel that “weak made strong” moment. Christ is the cornerstone, He is the Lord of all!
