Let me take a guess. I know I’m not going to be far-fetched in saying this, but you are probably reading this on your phone or some sort of smart device. I am going to guess I got that correct. And I am also going to take a guess and say that within the time you are reading this post, you get a notification in some other app, close the post and go read or take care of whatever that other buzz was. Maybe you come back and finish reading, maybe you don’t. But why is it that the one time your phone buzzes, laptop chimes, or something steals your attention, we forgot completely what we were doing before?
Let me take that above thought a step further. Or maybe just make you think a little bit more. What if that notification was from God? What if that little message, or text, or email or something was from God and He was trying to get your attention? What if He was trying to talk with you? What would you do? What would you say?
These are all really deep questions, but something so true in our own life. I mean in my own life, I never understood what it meant to talk to God - to pray. I always just thought it was some stuff you were supposed to say to express gratitude or talk about your struggles. But wow is it so much more than that. It’s your connection to be bold, to be honest, to let it out.
Prayer is something we can do anytime, anywhere, and with no thought for how long or short, it should be. Prayer is a conversation. I talk God listens, God talks I listen. It’s real. It is something you can do with God that lets you get things off your chest. You CAN be angry at God, you can tell God all the things that are going on in your life. He can take it. And not only can He take it, but he can help you heal in the process. This year one of my goals for myself was to pray boldly. To openly talk to God and pray things over my own life that I want God to work in and take over. And honestly, some of those prayers have been very heart opening to me.
So what is my point in saying all of this, and what does me talking about a phone have anything to do with prayer? Well, what if you had God’s phone number? What would you say? What would you talk about? Would you talk to God like one of your friends, or what would you talk to God like He could change your life? Or maybe would you even ignore it? Feel that buzz go off and just think to yourself you would rather not deal with that at all.
In a day and age when we are all a phone call away, an email away, an instant communication away from one another. Why is it that we feel this disconnect? It’s the same thought with God. Why is it that we feel this disconnect from God when we don’t even need to have a phone number? We can just talk.
My challenge to myself and anyone reading this is to think about your communication with God. Maybe even to think about your communication with those around you in your life. I know there are areas of my life I can be better at, especially when it comes to communicating with my circle of people. But what would you want to say to God? Think of it like a text message, or an email. As that is what most of us are doing all day now. Sending message after message, email after email, zoom call after zoom call.
If God was on the other line, what would you say?
I challenge you to take the same thought as me. To be bold. To not let anything get in the way of your communication with God and to let it out. Pray boldly. Listen intently. And watch what God can do in your life.
